President Donald Trump posted on social media yesterday that “there are no negotiations or dialogue with Iran, nor are any planned,” indicating that there are still few signs of an easing in tensions between the United States and Iran.
Against this backdrop, crude oil prices are likely to remain elevated today, which should provide underlying support for dollar/yen by increasing pressure on the yen.
However, in the United States, concerns over deteriorating fiscal conditions are lingering as the prolonged conflict with Iran raises the prospect of higher oil prices and inflation, as well as increased government spending. As a result, aggressive dollar buying is likely to be restrained, limiting the pair’s upside as well.
Dollar/yen is therefore expected to gradually edge higher, with the psychologically important 160.00 level remaining in focus.
