Today's main focus will be the release of the U.S. July employment report. A stronger-than-expected outcome would likely reinforce expectations that the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates in September, providing further support for the U.S. dollar.
At the same time, however, dollar/yen has already moved above the level where the most recent round of yen-buying intervention is widely believed to have taken place. As a result, market concerns over the possibility of additional intervention by the Japanese government and the Bank of Japan are increasing.
Should dollar/yen extend its gains toward the 159 level, trading is likely to become increasingly cautious and volatile, as investors weigh continued dollar strength against the growing risk of official intervention.
