Against this backdrop, ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are likely to continue providing underlying support for dollar/yen today through safe-haven demand for the U.S. dollar.
Later in the New York session, attention will turn to the release of the preliminary University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index for July. With crude oil prices having surged since early July—the survey period—investors will be watching closely to assess the extent to which higher energy costs have weighed on consumer confidence and inflation expectations.
That said, significant market moves appear unlikely. One-week at-the-money implied volatility for dollar/yen in the FX options market remains subdued at around 4.73%, suggesting that traders are not anticipating sharp near-term fluctuations. As a result, dollar/yen is likely to remain range-bound for the time being, with trading expected to center on the 161.50–162.50 area unless fresh geopolitical or macroeconomic catalysts emerge.
