Over the weekend, the United States and Iran exchanged fresh attacks, prompting NYMEX WTI crude oil futures to open the week more than 3% higher. In the foreign exchange market, the U.S. dollar has attracted safe-haven demand, with dollar/yen trading around the 162 level.
Looking ahead, developments surrounding Iran—and their impact on crude oil prices—are likely to remain the primary driver of dollar/yen. Any further escalation in geopolitical tensions would be expected to support oil prices, reinforcing the dollar through heightened inflation concerns in the United States while weighing on the yen via Japan’s deteriorating terms of trade.
Meanwhile, although recent reports regarding possible changes to the Government Pension Investment Fund’s (GPIF) investment policy briefly drew market attention, many investors remain skeptical about the likelihood of meaningful policy changes.
