Concerns over a prolonged Middle East conflict, along with rising expectations of interest rate hikes among major central banks including the Federal Reserve, continue to create an environment in which the yen is prone to selling. That said, the latest IMM data show that net short yen positions have built up to levels last seen in July 2024, making it easier to justify the view that recent yen weakness reflects speculative activity. If the yen’s depreciation accelerates beyond the 160 level against the dollar, market vigilance toward potential yen-buying intervention by the Japanese government and the Bank of Japan is likely to intensify.
